Unit10

Hello All -

Reviewing my Unit 3 assesment, I can say that I bascially rated myself the same. The only area I have not improved is finding a church. I will reach my goal not because I had to make one for this class but because I really do want to find a church. My faith is strong but I believe in my mind and in my heart that it would I would feel complete once I do find a church. I think its hard trying to find one. I want to belong to church where I feel as if its home. Not sure if that makes sense, but I want a sense of belonging to that church.

This class has brought me new experiences to explore and really an eye opening experience as well. Many times I believe that we think we are taking care of ourselves by exercising and eating right and having some kind of religion or faith behind us. I think that we often forget about taking care of ourselves mentally. While some of the exercises in this class was hard for me to concentrate as far as not letting my mind wonder, I still want to explore some of the practices to reach that human flourishing.

On that note, I want to wish everyone a good luck in your future endeavors. I hope that we all can find human flourishing in some way or fashion.

  1. Hey Casey,

I have really enjoyed reading your posts in this class! I totally understand how difficult it can be to find a church where you feel a sense of belonging. Although I was never really "religious" growing up, I always felt a deep spiritual connection. I never ever envisioned myself joining a church, but a friend of mine introduced me to the church of jesus christ of latter day saints. I am not trying to push anything on you, but I can just say from my experiences, that this church was one in which I really did feel a connection. The church has a huge emphasis on family, which I found very appealing. I wish you the best of luck in your search. If you would like any more information, please feel free to email me. My email is aimee.m.fairbanks@gmail.com. I strongly discourage you from doing a google search of this church as there is a lot of false info out there! Again, best of luck to you in all you do!

  2. Casey,

What I thought was cool is that you encouraged your son to participate with you in some of these exercises! I think that is a wonderful gift a parent can give to their child! By teaching kids how to meditate, they learn early on how to effectively deal with stressors that could potentially cause them harm later in life.

I wish you continued success in your quest for health; spiritually and mentally!

    Stay safe!

  3. I agree that this class exposed us to a different outlook on life. You should take your time and find a church you feel comfortable attending. You should be in a place that you will be able to benefit from, and enjoy being a part of it. I wish you the best of luck in the future.

  4. Casey, thanks for sharing. You're right, as a nurse I preach on nutrition, exercise, and medication management. Prior to this class, exercising the mind even sounded funny. But, with the new learned tools for relaxation and meditation, I give my patients a better chance to become healthier and heal. Good luck in your search for a church. In our community, we have 48 churches for 36K people. Its unfortunate with so many houses of worship to choose from, our community continues to be divided in financial and demographic points of view.
    Respectfully, Steve Tardy

  5. Casey,

I shared in your struggle with finding a church and fortunately for me, I was able to find one in which I felt as though I belonged and felt welcomed. It is difficult, but I think once you find the right one, it will be worth all your effort and time. I liked how you mentioned that you learned that being well is more than just eating healthy, exercising, and faith; it also includes mental health. I think it is the one that is the most obscure to us. We think that unless we have some type of mental disorder, we must be doing well. In a sense this is true, but there is so much more we can be doing such as the mental training, stress relieving, and meditation. As you know from reading the course material and the research studies, the mind plays a huge role on us physically. I am glad that you understand this connection and will be able to incorporate it into your life personally and professionally. I have enjoyed working with you this semester and reading your blog and discussion postings. Stay motivated and positive as your continue on your pursuit of a church and your other wellness goals. Good luck!

    Jennifer
